FROM MADISON AVENUE TO THE BRONX…
GREEN IS UNIVERSAL DELIVERS A “TASTE OF GREEN” TO NEW YORK
IN HONOR OF “GREEN WEEK,” NOVEMBER 14TH-21ST

New York, NY – November 10, 2010 – Green is Universal (GIU), NBC Universal’s environmental initiative, is bringing a taste of green to Madison Avenue, with bio-diesel fueled trucks delivering organic food and bicycle-powered smoothie bars setting up shop in and around media agencies throughout New York. The organic and healthy offerings will be available for five days starting November 15th, during “Green Week,” the company’s annual weeklong event of environmentally themed programming and activities.

Media agencies will be treated to five different organic fruit smoothie drinks, served in reusable BPA-free cold cups and bearing the names of the Green is Universal consumer segments, from the Eco-Chic Berry Blast to Eco-Mom Mango Madness and Eco-Nomical Nectar. [Click here for GIU’s newly published report on green audience segments.] The drinks will be mixed and blended by human-powered bicycles — creating the equivalent amount of energy needed to power a flat screen television for 2.5 days.

Also throughout the week, a GIU-branded truck will travel around Manhattan serving a free lunch of locally sourced, organic veggie burgers (on compostable plates), along with blue agave-sweetened iced tea. The truck is fueled by solar panels and vegetable oil from the truck’s own cooking. Keep track of the truck’s locations on Twitter to grab some green fare: http://www.twitter.com/Green_Truck.

“We thought this was a unique way to spread green awareness and remind our agency partners and New Yorkers alike about the importance of a healthy diet, eating locally sourced foods and saving energy,” said Debbie Goetz, VP of Integrated Sales Marketing for Green is Universal and Healthy at NBCU. “We hope this provides a fun ‘taste’ of green for all participants.”

Green Week efforts will extend from the streets of New York City to the company’s headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza—GIU is planting its own window farm of plants and vegetables to be displayed in the NBC Universal Experience Store starting November 14th. Low energy and high yield, the farm will grow up to 25 types of vegetable plants—all of which will be donated to four public schools around New York City to help contribute to fresh school lunches. Through GIU’s partnership with Green Living Technologies, students will have the opportunity to learn firsthand about the benefits of growing and eating locally grown, fresh foods.

The “Growing Green Wall,” a longer-term project, will also come to life on the second floor in the NBC Experience – a floor-to-ceiling display of plants and flowers.
