#LightsOffScreensOn Twitter Party

Lights Off. Screens On. Twitter Party

Join us on Earth Day for a Twitter party celebrating Green is Universal’s #LightsOffScreensOn Campaign!

Did you know if we all turn off two lights in our homes for an hour, every day, we’ll save more than five billion kilowatt-hours of electricity nationwide, each year? The amount of coal it takes to produce that much electricity could fill up the Empire State Building almost three times!

From April 21st through April 28th, we’ll be encouraging people to take the #LightsOffScreensOn pledge and go green by going dark–just turn off the lights while watching TV or using mobile devices. During our Earth Day Twitter Party, we’ll be spreading the word about the campaign and sharing other easy tips for saving energy and living greener. We’ll also be giving away green prizes!

Follow @GreenIsUni and use the hashtag #LightsOffScreensOn to join the fun!

SPECIAL CELEBRITY GUEST: Actress Meghan Markle (@MeghanMarkle) from the USA Network hit drama “Suits.” Meghan is also featured in a new The More You Know PSA about the environment!

Earth Week 2014: Lights Off. Screens On.

Lights Off. Screens On.

For Earth Week 2014, we’re asking you to join us in saving energy by watching in the dark.

When you consider that TVs, tablets, laptops, and mobile devices are all illuminated when in use, it begs the question: Why bother with any other lights?

If every household in the United States turned off two light bulbs for one hour every day, we’d save more than five billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, nationwide, each year. The amount of coal it takes to produce that much electricity could fill up the Empire State Building almost three times!

So this Earth Week, go here to pledge how many lights you’ll turn off anytime your screen is on. Then, enter to win an energy-efficient smart TV or a Green is Universal prize pack filled with lots of green goodies.

Plus, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+ to stay up-to-date with all our exciting plans!

Green Features at NBCUniversal Broadcast Center

NBCUniversal’s Universal City Broadcast Center opened in February 2014 as the new home for many of our west coast news and television operations. The two-building, 150,000-square-foot headquarters is the new workplace for more than 600 NBCUniversal employees including those at local affiliates KNBC and KVEA, as well as the L.A. bureaus of NBC News, CNBC, MSNBC, and Telemundo News.

Sustainability and technological innovation was top-of-mind throughout construction of the headquarters. NBCU participated in Southern California Edison’s “Savings by Design” program, which optimizes energy efficiency. Energy conservation and waste reduction processes were integrated during the conception and build out. The following savings have already been achieved, or are expected to be achieved, at the UCBC:

  • 96% of 2,760 total tons of debris generated during the demolition phase were recycled/reused as verified by LA County.
  • Total estimated annual savings include 718,443 lbs of CO2 and $128,404 in energy costs.
  • Between the facility’s two main buildings, it’s estimated the UCBC will save more than 800,000 kWH in electricity per year.
  • Employee recycling programs being implemented in 2014 are expected to result in substantial waste reductions and savings of material resources.

Why Shop When You Can Share?

sharing is the new shopping

This Earth Week, NBCUniversal joined the sharing economy, by partnering with yerdle, a new online platform, that helps you share stuff with friends. By giving away or loaning items you have, but rarely (or never) use, you’re reducing waste and conserving natural resources. Plus, you can nab items, from other people, for free! Many of our brands shared with you items from their sets and stars—see some of them here!

Even though Earth Week has come to a close, that’s no reason to stop sharing. Keep giving and getting items on yerdle, and check out other innovative companies that are stars in the sharing economy, here.

Power the Earth Week Parties!

universal orlando_hollywood

To kick-off NBCUniversal’s Earth Week, Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood will host a “Power the Earth Week Party” at their CityWalk locations. The interactive and educational program will encourage guests to generate pedal power from stationary bicycles. That energy will power video screens showing clips from Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s upcoming movie “Planet Ocean.” Narrated by Josh Duhamel and directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand and Michael Pitiot, the film takes us on a magnificent and unprecedented journey into the heart of the least-known regions of our planet. Throughout the event, guests will be challenged to pedal faster to increase their energy output—with the results being displayed on a meter.

CityWalk guests will also be encouraged to dance the night away on a special energy floor powered by the dancer’s movements.
