about Green Screens
As technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, more and more consumers are looking to replace their outdated equipment with new, energy-efficient products. However, with technology constituting 70 percent of landfill toxic waste, it is vital for consumers to understand the importance of recycling technology in an environmentally responsible manner.
To make recycling easier, HP, the world's largest technology company, and Staples, the world's largest office products company, are teaming up with Green Is Universal, the Environmental Media Association and Electronic Recyclers to encourage New Yorkers to recycle their outdated technology for free as part of NBC Universal's Green Screens campaign surrounding Earth Week.
Kicking off the campaign on NBC's TODAY Show on April 21, HP and Staples will place bins at Rockefeller Center Plaza April 21 - 25 for consumers to safely dispose of their computers, cell phones and other technology at no charge. Students from the New York School of Visual Arts will be on the Plaza to create a mosaic with the donated products. At the culmination of the week-long recycling event, the TODAY Show will announce the tally of items collected at the Plaza.
Consumers can also drop off technology for free recycling at Staples' 76 stores in the five boroughs and Long Island through April 27.(1) Through May 3, Staples is offering customers across the country $50 off a new, energy-efficient HP printer when customers bring any, old printer into stores for recycling, as well as rebates of up to $150 on select HP computers.(2)
"Offering everyday recycling is one of the ways Staples makes it easy for our customers to protect the environment, what we call Eco Easy," said Scott Rankin, vice president of technology merchandising for Staples. "We are excited to work with HP and NBC to give New York City businesses and residents an easy way to take action against the growing problem of e-waste."
For those living outside the tri-state area who want to recycle small electronics, the EMA is providing postage paid envelopes available at www.ema-online.org. In addition, Electronic Recyclers encourages consumers to call 1-800-RECYCLING.
(1) Limit 2 computers per person per day. See stores for terms and restrictions.
(2) New printer (min. price $159) must be purchased at same time as old printer is recycled. Printer offer ends 05/03/08 and is not combinable with other offers.
