Remember when we were younger and the words fair trade only referred to transactions around the lunch room table; an apple for an orange or peanut butter crackers for cheese crackers. Well, environmental fair trade is a lot like that except there is someone observing the process to make sure that each exchange is fair; these are organizations like Fair Trade USA and the Fairtrade Foundation. As the mediator, these organizations are looking out for everyone’s best interest: the laborers, environment and you.

For farmers, laborers, and fishermen Fair trade USA ensures that their wages are enough to cover the cost of living and basic household needs. When the needs of these folks are met, they are less likely to cut corners in the production of commercial goods. In order for a product to be Fair trade certified, the area from which it comes must comply with certain environmental standards. These standards are numerous and include the mandate of renewable soil practices such as crop rotation and the use of absolutely no GMO’s (genetically modified organisms). These environmental practices minimize our carbon footprint and help ensure that the earth remains a viable home for us and generations to come.
