Toss Toxins Safely and Responsibly

Dear Mr. Green,

I really enjoyed your article on using lemons instead of bleach as cleaning agents. I would like to adopt more eco-friendly cleaning habits, but unfortunately, my cabinets are filled with harmful cleaning agents. What is the best way to dispose of these chemicals without harming the environment?

Best,
KE

Composting For the Neat Freak

Dear Mr. Green,

compost-sm.jpg
I’m committed to being green and I want to create my own compost pile this year. Problem is, I don’t like messes and a whole bunch of rotting garbage and worms seems like a big one to me. Any ideas on how I can contain the mess to a small area with out being unsightly or smelly?

Signed,

Clean Cut

The Greenest Generation?

Dear Mr. Green,

poppy_sm.jpgI’m a child of the Great Depression, a World War II veteran and of a generation that seems to have already embraced “green” since before it was fashionable. Growing up with very little money, we always had to be conservative. My mother would make our clothes and then we would make those clothes last what seemed a lifetime, passing them on to younger members of our family for years! We knew the real value of a neighbor was not in the friendly competition that keeps our lawns greener than the others but in the helping hands we could lend each other. I understand that the newer generations have a lot more “fun” than we had when I was growing up with video games and I even enjoy indulging with my grand kids from time to time, but what I’m wondering is where did the disconnect happen between my generation and the new?

Is It That Time of Year Already?

eco-worrier-sm.jpgDear Mr. Green,

As we begin to prepare for the holidays and the ending of another year can you give us some advice on how to avoid eco-fatigue through to the New Year – when it will be time for our Green Resolutions?

Thank you,

Till Recyclables Do Us Part

Dear Mr. Green,

recycling.jpgI recently married the love of my life! We have the perfect relationship in every way except for… the garbage. Knowing so many singles in NYC, I suppose I should be counting my lucky stars that this is really our only difference of opinion. You see, I am a serious recycler and he, I have come to learn, could care less. I have 4 separate bins in my kitchen. One is for garbage, one for glass, aluminum and plastic, one for cardboard and paper, and one for batteries. They are all clearly labeled and he knows my dedication to reducing waste yet, when I come home from work, I find everything in the garbage bin. How can I get him to cooperate?

Signed,
Garbage Picker

Fleeing from Fleas!

Dear Mr. Green,

I am familiar with using diatomaceous earth for ridding your home of fleas and have even used it before with great success. Now I have a toddler crawling all over my carpets (and petting my dog!) and am concerned with her breathing in the dust. Is there a better alternative that is non-toxic to little ones?

Thanks!

Waxing Philosphic on Green Holidays

gratitude_sm.jpgDear Mr. Green,

What are your suggestions for green gifts this holiday season? What is your favorite green gift you’ve given? And your favorite green gift you’ve received? Do you give gifts at all?

Happy Holidays!

Revealing Recycling

recycling.jpgDear Mr. Green,

I need the 411 on recycling. What goes in what can and when. For example, aluminum… I know I can put aluminum cans, foil from take out, but what about those little lids that peel off of your yogurt? They look like foil. And plastic – can I throw bread bags in with my other plastics? I would love to know a full list of everyday things that are recyclable but that we more often throw in the garbage can.

Thanks!

Teresa

Is There Really an Eco-Friendly Diaper?

Dear Mr. Green,

I’m a new mom and I’m trying to be eco-minded in the choices I make for my baby. I use 7th generation diapers, but are they all they say they are? Environmentally speaking, what are the best diapers and diaper wipes?

Thanks,

Mommy to Imani
