plant+trees.jpgVolunteers from NBC Universal planted dozens of trees on Wednesday as part of a concerted effort to "green their routines."

They planted trees and perennials, removing leaves, and beautifying the Carver Houses in East Harlem with the New York Restoration Project (NYRP.)

NBC Universal President and CEO Jeff Zucker and Lauren Zalaznick, president of "Green is Universal," presented the NYRP with a grant from the NBC Universal Foundation to kick off the volunteer project.

The Green Meadow Point Garden Club has been promoting recycling and reusing for many years. We have worked with neighbors and children on the value of recycling. National Garden Clubs, Inc. has this as one of their goals. Our club has won awards for the promotion of anti-litter/reuse/recycle/conserve. We throw very little in our trash cans on collection day. We have a long list of things we reuse to help save the landfills.

I'm digging into the "Made in Nature" certified organic grapes ("picked for sweetness", etc). Very tasty, and, as an organic farmer myself, certainly appreciated that they were
grown organically.

Took me a while, though, to notice that the plastic container the grapes were packaged in could, in fact, be recycled (PET 1). I am truly hoping that more and more organic products hit the market, and, secondly, that they are are packed in recyclable/reuseable/natural materials. Organic should NOT be about adding to the plastic waste stream.
