Wicked Fun with Food this Halloween

spooky_tomato.jpgHow to prevent scaring yourself and your kids' post-Halloween bash? It's frightening how much sugar our kids consume on October 31st. Instead of giving yours and your neighbor's kids tons of sugar and toxins, have fun with real food.

Halloween is the party season kick-off. If you are planning a Halloween party, let's give something good for our kids to eat. But, what's good to eat? I don't like the idea of giving kids Kit-Kat bars or gummy bears. At the same time, I want to see excitement on kids' faces during Halloween as much as you do. I've put together a list of food that you can decorate the house for your party and serve to all the kids (big and small). Kids can help you create this spooky crafts!

Decorative Healthy Food:
- Cockroaches - dried dates
- Eyeballs - black olive put into round-shaped cheese
- More eyeballs - green olives with tomato in them
- Bat stomachs - dried apricots
- Rat bones - pretzel sticks
- Fingers - cheese sticks cut in the shape of fingers
- Fingernails - dried garlic flakes

Color can create a wonderful festive mood. By adding orange to your meals, kids will have beta-carotene from fruits and vegetables. As an extra bonus, it contributes to your immune health. The body converts beta-carotene into Vitamin A, which is a powerful antioxidant. Nutritious colored orange foods are carrots, sweet potatoes, oranges, cantaloupe, and winter squash.

Kids have their favorite junk foods that they like to stick with; therefore as parents we can replace it with something similar and more nutritious. For instance, instead of buying apple that is heavily caramelized, at the party play bobbinging for apples or make mini caramelized apples. The Disney channel has a list of daring drinks and fruity snacks that your kids will not only enjoy the taste but also have fun cooking. My favorites are the Pear Witch Project video and Melon Brain!

Parents are always looking for new ideas, so please leave us a note on what you have been trying with your kids. Begin a fun healthy tradition for your family and friends.
