Harlem Goes Green on Earth Day

Getting up at the ungodly hour of 5am the morning of April 22nd is not my usual routine but for the day's activities, it was definitely worth it. I was going to be planting trees in East Harlem through NBC Volunteers to beautify the area and help reduce the rate of childhood asthma in that part of New York City.

I had been looking forward to getting out in the sun and fresh air for days. The bus ride uptown from 30 Rock made me even more excited. Lately I've been into finding serenity in my daily routine. Bonding with nature and getting into the whole spirit of Earth Day was the perfect way for me to do this.

Living in an apartment building in Queens, I never realized what hard work gardening is. There are many steps in successfully planting a tree so that it will grow strong and healthy. It has to be properly rooted into the ground, mulched and watered. With the help of Harold (aka LL Cool J) from the New York Restoration Project, I broke a good sweat planting 2 of the 150 trees that the NBC Volunteers planted in the playground area we were working in. Onlookers and helpers included residents of the apartment complex and children happily playing and laughing around us.

Although it was slightly cold when we got there, the sun came out to greet us later on. It was as if the universe knew it was Earth Day.

Looking back on the experience, it is such a great feeling to know that what I did today will help children breathe freely and add so much magnificence to a struggling area of New York City for years to come.
